The Italian Language
The Italian Language Italian is part of the Indo-European language family. Specifically a Romance language, having descended from the ancient Latin which was spoken in the times of the Roman Empire, it is spoken by an approximate 63 million people.
Aside from in Italy, it is spoken in Switzerland, the Vatican City (though the official language is Latin) and in the republic of San Marino. Spoken Italian retains the distinction between the long and short consonants which existed in Latin, unlike most other Romance languages. In terms of the lexicon, Italian is regarded as the most synonymous with ancient Latin.
Interestingly, it is not just English youths who employ handy abbreviations when sending an SMS. In Italian, x is often used instead of per: This is because the multiplication operator, x, is pronounced per in Italian and so it is sometimes used to replace the word per, which means for. So, for example, 'per te' (for you) is shortened to 'x te' (comparable to the English, 4 U).
Words containing per can also have it replaced with x. In perché (meaning both 'why' and 'because') is often shortened to xché for instance. This usage is useful when jotting down quick notes or to fit more text into the low character limit of an SMS, but is derided in formal writing. Italians amiably refer to their own language as il parlar gentile or, in English, the gentle language.
