The Czech Language

Czech is a West Slavic language spoken by around 12 million native speakers in all. 

The phonology of Czech is notoriously difficult for non natives to get their tounges round. To an Englishman, for example, some words appear not to have any vowels in at all: zmrzl (froze solid), ztvrdl (hardened), scvrkl (shrunk), čtvrthrst (quarter-handful), blb (fool), vlk (wolf), or smrt (death).

An amusing example of this is the phrase "strč prst skrz krk" meaning "stick a finger through your throat".

The truth is that the consonants l and r can function as the nucleus of a syllable in Czech, since they are sonorant consonants. A similar phenomenon also occurs in American English, where the syllables at the ends of "butter" and "bottle" are reduced with syllabic consonants forming syllable nuclei.

In writing, Czech orthography relies on diacritics.  The writing system is primarily phonemic (rather than phonetic) because an individual grapheme usually corresponds to an individual phoneme (rather than a sound).
