The Swedish Language

Swedish is a North Germanic language spoken by around 9 million people. To a large extent it is mutually intelligible with Norwegian and slightly less so with Danish. In areas within Sweden of low social mobility, there exist some regional dialects which are so different to standard Swedish that they are barely comprehensible.  These dialects are in decline, despite local authorities promoting their use.

Elements of Swedish grammar are comparable to English.  It has no grammatical cases, few inflections, two genders and a distinction between singular and plural.   The lexicon is made up largely of Germanic words, though a number of French words were imported to the vocabulary in the 18th century and were transcribed into Swedish.  As a result they remain detectable as French words owing to the syllable final stress imparted upon them.

As with many Germanic languages, new words can be formed by compounding.  In some cases this has amusing results.  As when the word for 'production controller system software update' is compounded giving the Swedish word 'produktionsstyrningssystemsprogramvaruuppdatering'!  It is to be noted that words such as this scarcely occur outside of technical writing.
